Since 794 when Kyoto became the capital of Japan, the Imperial Palace was for more than a thousand years the residence of the emperor and his family until 1868. The Imperial Palace was several times destroyed by fire. The last reconstruction dates from 1855. The Imperial Palace has a large stroll garden with a pond called “Oikeniwa” and another stroll garden called “Gonaitei”.
